Sarı Süleyman Pasha

Sarı Süleyman Paşa also known as Bosnian: Sari Sulejman-paša was an Ottoman statesman. He was Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire from 18 November 1685 until 18 September 1687.[1] "San" means "blond (haired)" in Turkish. Sarı Süleyman Paşa was born in what is today Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was executed after the defeat of the Ottoman forces in the Battle of Mohács (1687). After the defeat, Ottoman army started a rebellion versus the grand vizier. Sarı Süleyman Pasha was afraid that the rebellion would result in his death, so he escaped from the commanding position, first to Belgrade and then to Istanbul. At the beginning of September, 1687, news about his defeat and escape came to Istanbul. After Mehmed IV heard of that, he proclaimed Abaza Siyavuş Pasha as the new commander of the armed forces, and, eventually, as the new Grand Vizier. Soon after that, Sarı Süleyman Pasha was executed. Two months later, the sultan himself was also removed from power as the result of the defeat in the Battle of Mohács, and was replaced by Suleiman II.
